Perry Shear, MD, FRCS(C), FAANS
Biography
Perry Shear, MD, a general neurosurgeon with an interest in spine disorders, and an assistant professor in the department of neurosurgery at Yale School of Medicine. He has practiced in Fairfield County, Connecticut, for 28 years. Previously, he served as chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Bridgeport Hospital for six years. There, he also served as a member of the Bridgeport Hospital Medical executive committee and received the Humanism Award.
As a clinician, Dr. Shear prides himself on his ability to listen to and communicate with his patients. “This is critical to making an accurate diagnosis in order to discuss the best treatment options,” he says. He is mindful of the anxiety that his patients are experiencing when they come to a neurosurgeon. “It is important to connect and empathize with my patients when discussing a diagnosis and treatment plan,” he says. When treating patients with spine disorders, he always tries to maximize non-surgical options before considering surgical treatment.
Dr. Shear chose to leave private practice neurosurgery and join an academic environment at Yale School of Medicine in order to further expand his own knowledge base and to provide better neurosurgical care. Working at Yale will allow him to collaborate with neurosurgical colleagues, who are involved in new, innovative, and state-of-the-art neurosurgical treatments. His patients in Fairfield County will now have more direct access to the Department of Neurosurgery at Yale School of Medicine.
