Biography

Michael Alperovich, MD, is a plastic surgeon who provides reconstruction for patients who have congenital, oncologic or traumatic injuries or problems. He also performs aesthetic procedures. His areas of expertise include breast reconstruction after cancer (both microvascular and implant reconstruction), craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgery, and facial and breast aesthetic surgery.

Dr. Alperovich has specialized training in craniofacial and microvascular surgery. For breast reconstruction, he routinely performs the DIEP microvascular free flap reconstruction, which uses tissue from the abdomen to replace tissue removed in a mastectomy. Dr. Alperovich was also the first surgeon in this region to perform a new and innovative surgery that transfers tissue from the thigh for breast reconstruction (an advantage for patients with less belly fat) called the PAP (profunda artery perforator) microvascular free flap. He remains one of very few surgeons in the country able to offer this type of breast reconstruction.

When meeting a new patient, Dr. Alperovich says his goal is to provide a surgery that will maximize the patient’s quality of life by restoring or recreating appearance and function to the best possible state. “I promise every patient that once I start a reconstruction or aesthetic procedure, I will keep working with them until they are satisfied,” he says.

He finds his work to be invigorating on a daily basis. “As a plastic surgeon, I have the privilege of being one of the few types of doctors that patients look forward to seeing,” Dr. Alperovich says. “The best part of my job is having the chance help a patient during a time of need and to serve as a positive, uplifting part of what can be a trying chapter.”

Dr. Alperovich is an assistant professor of surgery (plastic and reconstructive) at Yale School of Medicine. He is active in cutting-edge research, and has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and multiple book chapters. Dr. Alperovich serves on the editorial boards of several plastic surgery journals.
