Biography

Maricar Malinis, MD, is an infectious disease specialist who focuses on the care of patients with end-stage organ disease prior to transplantation and post-transplantation. She evaluates transplant candidates and treats infections that can come up after the surgery. She tells new patients: “I am here to listen, help and guide you to make the best possible decision that is compatible with your goals of care and quality of life.”

An assistant professor of medicine (infectious diseases) and of surgery (transplant) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Malinis is also a researcher focusing on clinical outcomes of special populations of transplant patients, including HIV-positive patients and older adults. In addition, she treats viral infections in solid organ and stem cell transplant recipients, as well as hepatitis C virus in HIV positive patients.

Dr. Malinis is most excited about her involvement in a clinical trial study of organ transplantation in which both donors and recipients are HIV positive. In collaboration with Johns Hopkins University and the New England Organ Bank, she assisted with the donation process for the world’s first HIV-positive liver transplant and the nation’s first HIV-positive kidney transplant. “This study can potentially expand the donor pool and decrease waitlist times for HIV-positive candidates,” she says.
