Biography

Layla Van Doren, MD, is a hematologist who specializes in caring for people with sickle cell disease as well as bleeding and clotting disorders, with special focus on women’s health issues related to these conditions.

“As a hematologist, educating providers and patients is my passion. It is critical to decreasing mortality and improving outcomes,” she says. “Historically, patients have been misinformed by health-care professionals and myths in the community. With knowledge, they can understand why taking disease-modifying therapy can prevent damage to important organs and help them live longer.”

As an assistant professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Van Doren researches the mechanisms behind blood platelet disorders with the goal of developing new treatment strategies.

Dr. Van Doren received her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She completed her residency at the University of Southern California and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Tufts Medical Center.
