Biography

Michael Baumgaertner, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Yale Medicine. He specializes in Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, Hip and Knee Orthopedic Surgery, Shoulder and Elbow Orthopedic Surgery, Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Surgery, and Orthopedic Trauma Surgery. Dr. Baumgaertner treats patients of all ages, from children to adults.

He is currently accepting new patients and is available for appointments in New Haven and Guilford. Dr. Baumgaertner's clinical practice focuses on helping patients with knee pain and stiffness. He has expertise in various procedures to improve the knee joint's function, such as Abrasion Arthroplasty, minimally invasive Total Knee Replacement, Partial Knee Replacement, and Knee Joint Steroid Injections. He also treats Knee Osteoarthritis, Renovascular Hypertension, Knee Stiffness, and Loose Bodies in the Knee.

Dr. Baumgaertner's research interests include understanding and improving the treatment of hip fractures, specifically fractures near the thigh bone. His study highlights the importance of being aware of the 'tip-apex distance,' a measurement used during surgery to ensure proper placement of screws and other devices to fix the fracture.
