Kidney Disease & Transplant Program
A variety of diseases can affect the health of the kidneys. We care for patients at every stage of kidney disease, offering scientifically proven treatments and a personalized care plan. The Department of Urology is part of the Living Donor Transplant Program at the Yale New Haven Transplantation Center where we care for patients with renal disease who are candidates for kidney transplantation. We have expertise in performing laparoscopic, living-donor nephrectomies, delivering the highest quality care to the kidney donor-patient team at Yale. At Yale Medicine, our patients have full access to leading physicians who can help with all aspects of renal disease. Patients also have access to world-class resources at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven. Our doctors are at the forefront of kidney disease and kidney cancer treatment and research, including novel immunotherapy approaches and the genetic characterization of kidney cancers. In addition, the Yale School of Medicine's Hereditary Kidney Cancer and Genetic Assessment Program investigates potential genetic causes of kidney cancer in young patients, including those with a family history and individuals with multiple tumors, to help family members determine if they carry a risk for kidney cancer.Abdominal Imaging
The breadth of experience among our doctors is reflected in their unique approach to patient care, management of complex medical cases, expertise in imaging guidelines and unwavering commitment to clinical excellence. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical test that physicians use to diagnose and treat medical conditions. It uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. An MRI does not use radiation. A computed tomography scan, more commonly known as a CT scan, is a diagnostic medical test that produces multiple images of the inside of the body. The cross-sectional images generated during a CT scan can be reformatted in multiple planes, and can even generate three-dimensional images of internal body structures. We also specialize in fluoroscopic imaging—real-time moving pictures displayed on a monitor. This specialized technology helps us detect conditions that affect the gastrointestinal as well as the urinary and reproductive (genitourinary) tracts. Our experts perform esophagrams, upper GI series and barium enemas to look for swallowing and digestion conditions. In addition, we do a variety of other imaging tests, including cystograms to detect voiding issues and hysterosalpingograms, which help us see if a woman’s fallopian tubes are open or blocked.Advanced Endoscopy Program
We focus on diseases of the pancreas, biliary tract, and gastrointestinal tract, and evaluate patients with a variety of symptoms and diseases, many of whom require advanced endoscopic procedures. Our team members work closely with referring physicians to promptly perform procedures, consultations, and discuss management options. Using a multidisciplinary approach to complex conditions, we collaborate with pathologists, cytologists, surgeons, oncologists, and radiologists to deliver care. Our endoscopic ultrasound program is among the largest of its kind in New England, and our experienced physicians perform approximately 1,500 procedures annually. This sophisticated procedure includes fine-needle aspiration of masses, cysts, and lymph nodes located in and around the digestive tract. This highly sophisticated technique is used to stage malignancies of the esophagus, rectum, and pancreas. Other outpatient endoscopic procedures we perform include: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), a diagnostic endoscopic procedure for the upper gastrointestinal tract Enteroscopy, an endoscopic procedure used to examine the small intestine Colonoscopy with difficult polyp removal Sigmoidoscopy stenting of the esophagus, duodenum and colon to treat obstructionsNuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine is a specialized field within radiology that uses small amounts of radioactive substances during imaging procedures to help doctors detect abnormalities and diseases at their earliest stages, allowing for the best clinical outcomes for our patients. The field of nuclear medicine contains important studies for identifying, evaluating, and treating a full spectrum of diseases within the body, including most types of cancers, neurological disorders, thyroid diseases, and gastrointestinal conditions.We provide studies to evaluate kidney function, kidney obstruction, portal hypertension, gastrointestinal bleed localization, lung scans for pulmonary embolism, and tumor diagnosis and staging, as well as seizure focus localization in the brain using PET/CT scans. Our services include the use of DaTscan (Ioflupane) to evaluate Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, and amyloid brain scans for suspected Alzheimer’s disease. We offer Ra-223 therapy to alleviate bone pain—we were the first center in Connecticut to provide this treatment.Radiology & Biomedical Imaging

The Yale Medicine Interventional Radiology (IR) program is one of the leading programs in the nation. Our interventional radiologists, recognized as pioneers in the field of minimally invasive medicine, work with nursing and technologist staff to offer image-guided, non-surgical treatments for vascular and non-vascular disease with excellent outcomes for pediatric and adult patients. Our interventional radiology procedures are performed for a broad range of conditions spanning gastrointestinal/hepatobiliary, gynecology, infectious disease, oncology , pediatrics, pain management, urology, and venous and arterial disease. Interventional radiologists use advanced imaging modalities including ultrasound, fluoroscopy, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging to perform procedures through tiny pinholes, thereby avoiding surgery and long recovery times. IR advances enable minimally invasive treatment of many conditions on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to recover in the comfort of their own home. We also offer comprehensive care dedicated to the treatment of pediatric patients, including vascular malformations, biopsy service with sedation, feeding tube maintenance, and expert care in hepatobiliary, urological, gastrointestinal, and musculoskeletal disorders. Our team at Yale New Haven Hospital was the first in Connecticut and among the first in the nation to perform transcatheter pulmonary embolectomy, a procedure for the removal of a blood clot from the pulmonary arteries. Such patients are initially evaluated by a multidisciplinary Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) , and a comprehensive treatment plan is then developed. We also have one of the world’s leading hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) and vascular malformation programs. Founded in 1994, both serve as role models for other programs around the world. Our physicians play a critical role in the timely diagnosis and management of acutely ill patients. As an integral part of a Level I trauma center, we provide comprehensive imaging services for our inpatients and outpatients. We provide highly specialized care in all areas of acute care imaging, and are pioneers in developing emergency radiology standards of care.Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis Program
The Prenatal Genetic Diagnostic Program provides expert genetic screening, testing, and counseling for parents. Our tests and services includefirst-trimester screening, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), amniocentesis, fetal blood sampling (FBS), and many others. After diagnosis, we provide counseling and connect patients to appropriate support networks to help parents adjust to and prepare for their child's special needs. In addition to pioneering the development of CVS and FBS, Yale has the most experienced team for these procedures in New England. Between 11 and 12 weeks after a woman's last menstrual period, she can instantly learn the baby's risk for Down syndrome and other abnormalities with our safe, noninvasive first-trimester risk assessment. Our team of specially-certified physicians, sonographers, and genetic counselors will provide patients with accurate information as quickly as technology allows. The procedure is simple: Patients provide a blood sample at least one week before their scheduled appointment, then visit us between weeks 11 and 14 of their pregnancy. Our comprehensive prenatal testing and genetic counseling services include: First and second trimester screenings Targeted ultrasound (formerly known as Level II ultrasound). We are equipped to perform targeted vaginal ultrasounds at an early gestational age, and provide diagnostic information early in a woman's pregnancy. Antenatal testing services. These services include nonstress testing, biophysical profiles, fetal versions, and PG gel insertions to help ensure fetal well-being throughout pregnancy. Fetal echocardiography. The Yale Fetal Cardiovascular Center is the most experienced diagnostic and treatment program of its kind in New England and provides the full range of prenatal surgical care. Prenatal ultrasound testing is typically performed during the second trimester to diagnose cardiac conditions in an unborn baby. Chorionic villus sampling (CVS). This is usually performed between the 10th and 12th weeks of pregnancy and involves the removal of a small sample of the placenta from the uterus. Amniocentesis. This is usually performed during the 15thweek of pregnancy or later, the procedure removes a sample of amniotic fluid from the uterus for evaluation. Fetal blood sampling. Fetal bloodis collected directly from the umbilical cord orfetus to test for signs of anemia and otherblooddisorders. Fetal tissue biopsy. This is typically performed between the 17thand 20thweeks of pregnancy, for patients who carry an abnormal gene for a severe skin disease to find out whether or not their fetus is similarly affected. Fetal karyotyping. This involving the collection of chorionic villi, amniotic fluid, or fetalblood to obtain and analyze chromosomes for abnormalities. Biochemical testing Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis. This involves laboratory testing to detect chromosomal abnormalities and other genetic mutations in a patient
