Neonatal Transport Program
Our Neonatal Transport Program quickly and safely brings infants to Yale from throughout the Northeast for such specialized services as surgery, advanced cardiac diagnosis and treatment, inhaled nitric oxide, and ECMO, or extra corporeal membrane oxygenation, a machine that acts as heart-lung machine for life-threatening heart and/or lung problems. We transfer critically ill newborns via specially staffed vehicles with state-of-the-art equipment.
In addition to standard neonatal critical care therapies, we provide:
- Therapeutic hypothermia
- High-frequency ventilation
- Inhaled nitric oxide
- Cardioversion, defibrillation, and external cardiac pacing
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital serves as the regional neonatal center for southern Connecticut, taking referrals from the area and neighboring states. The NICU has a capacity of 55 patients, making it the largest clinical unit in the Children's Hospital, and the largest NICU in the state.
