Advances in Childhood Diabetes
Overview
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a condition in which the body does not produce insulin, which is necessary for taking in and processing fuel. To treat type 1 diabetes, insulin is needed because the body has completely stopped making it, explains Stuart A. Weinzimer, MD, a Yale Medicine pediatric endocrinologist.
Researchers such as Dr. Weinzimer are actively involved in the search for new ways to make living with diabetes simpler, including the development of an artificial pancreas, a device in which sensors work with an insulin pump to check sugar levels and deliver insulin automatically upon demand.
