The purpose of this study is to understand what factors might help us decide when to give a blood transfusion when children are very sick with an infection.

    Eligibility Criteria

          • PICU admission
          • Age < 18 years
          • Septic Shock, defined by the following:
    1. Has at least one SIRS criteria, AND
    2. Need for vasoactive infusion for shock (excluding dopamine < 5 mcg/kg/min), AND
    3. Administration of systemic antimicrobial therapy for proven or suspected infection
