Thoracentesis

Definition

Thoracentesis is a minimally invasive medical procedure that involves the insertion of a needle or catheter into the pleural space between the lungs and the chest wall to remove excess fluid, air, or both. This procedure can be performed for diagnostic purposes, to determine the cause of fluid accumulation, or for therapeutic purposes, to relieve symptoms such as shortness of breath and chest pain.
