Secondary Hyperparathyroidism

Definition

Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a medical condition characterized by the excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the parathyroid glands in response to low levels of calcium in the blood. This condition is often caused by chronic kidney disease, vitamin D deficiency, or other factors that lead to low calcium levels, resulting in increased PTH production to maintain normal calcium levels.
