Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)

Definition

The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to detect hidden blood in the stool, which can be an early sign of colorectal cancer or other gastrointestinal conditions. The test involves collecting a small stool sample and analyzing it for the presence of blood using antibodies that react with human hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells).
