Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision, due to leaking blood vessels. This occurs as a complication of diabetic retinopathy and can lead to vision loss or blindness if left untreated.
