Acute Bacterial Endocarditis

Definition

Acute bacterial endocarditis is a rapidly progressing infection of the heart's inner lining (endocardium) or heart valves, caused by bacteria entering the bloodstream and settling in the heart. The valves in the heart do not work correctly, and the heart has to work harder to get blood to the body. It can lead to severe complications if not promptly treated.
